Paris climate talks – let’s change the story

Help New Internationalist provide a platform for grassroots voices at the COP21 talks.

In 40 days, world leaders will all go to Paris to make an agreement about climate change. But big business and their supporters and media will be there to control what people talk about. People from communities that might not survive will not have much power to affect the decisions. If it’s like the climate talks in Copenhagen, they will not be allowed in.

At New Internationalist we want to help these people speak. We are a small non-profit co-operative, so we’re starting our first crowdfunding appeal to get enough money for this. Please look at our video, and support if you can: http://www.crowdfunder.co.uk/Paris-grassroots

What we want to do

We want to show the real story – from inside the climate talks and on the streets. We will report the voices and views that most media do not. We want people to hear voices from the Majority World. But we need support.

With your help we’ll send Jess Worth and Danny Chivers (2 New Internationalist reporters) and Richard Roaf (our filmmaker) to the Paris climate talks to report on the real story. You can follow our journey every day of the talks, and together we’ll:

1. Let the people speak who we don’t usually hear: interviews, short films and articles for New Internationalist;

2. Explain what’s really going on: big business and media will try to control it, but we’ll give a different view by reporting from inside the talks and out on the streets, from the protests and activists;

3. Create an alternative media centre: this online hub will bring together alternative, grassroots and new views on the Paris climate talks, breaking news, and, if you can’t go to Paris, tell you how to support the campaign for climate justice.

We know that the solutions to climate change are not going to come from in the conference centre. They are going to come from the Indigenous people across North America who are stopping tar sands pipelines, and from the communities who are putting democratic renewable energy into practice across the world.

If we work together, we can share these stories and others with a global audience and support Majority World campaigners and activists. We’ll question the stories that the rich governments tell. And, unlike Copenhagen, we’ll talk about the future, after the Paris talks, to build the powerful movement that we need to get climate justice.
