Goa, about 40 years ago, was just Goa. The relaxed people who lived there moved away to many other countries. Because the Portuguese colonial masters didn’t do much to educate or create jobs for the locals.
In the past, most Indians, and most people who lived by the sea (except Caucasians), thought of beaches as places to sometimes swim – or walk, with all your clothes on – to enjoy the sea air. Old people, women and children put their foot in the water, then maybe walked in up to their knees. People fished a lot. And they developed wonderful seafood meals.
Local people did not spend their free time on the beach. They ran inside to avoid the sun. This is true of most native coastal people around the world. Caucasians, from colder climates, stayed in the sun and worshipped it. Local Asians or Africans thought this was crazy. As Kipling said, ‘mad dogs and Englishmen (who) go out in the noon-day sun.’
Goa was ‘discovered’ and became a fashionable place when hippies and travellers went there in the 1960s and 1970s. People from Goa are usually relaxed, but they soon got angry about the drugs and people with not many clothes on. They protested, but tourists brought in a lot of money. The drugs and sex soon became big business. Environmentalists said the destruction of beaches was terrible. Families were very angry to see foreigners having sex where everyone could see.
Now Indian tourists come to stare at the nearly naked women. There is a Russian mafia and an Israeli mafia. There are beaches where Indians cannot go and local people do not dare to go. White women and drugs from Russia and Eastern Europe are sold at very high prices to people who have enough money. The mafia does nothing to you if you do nothing to them.
Trafficking and drugs are part of a frightening world far away from my life. But an article in a local newspaper made me worried and sleepless.
A convicted British paedophile is fighting against being sent back to India to go to court for being part of the paedophile group that sexually abused and tortured children in a children’s home in Goa between 1986 and 1992.
Kerala, Goa, and other tourist destinations are popular with western paedophiles. The men often escape back to their own countries with no punishment.
The Indian government has tried to get Britain to send Raymond Varley back to India to charge him for sexual crimes against children in Goa. His lawyers say he will kill himself if he has to return to India and that he cannot go to court because he has problems with memory loss and dementia.
Indian and British activists are shocked that Varley, who has abused children before, might escape punishment. The neuro-psychologist, who he chose himself, said he suffers from dementia.
Christine Beddoe, who used to be director of End Child Prostitution, Child Pornography and Trafficking (ECPAT) UK, says: ‘If Raymond Varley has dementia or not, I am really shocked that the Crown Prosecution Service did not get an independent psychiatric assessment.’
She adds: ‘If they don’t send him to India, he will be a free man and will no longer be stopped from going near schools and children’s play areas.’
After Prime Minister David Cameron’s promise to fight child abuse, paedophile activity and porn, I am shocked that there seems to be more protection for paedophiles than for children. Child rights organizations like End Child Prostitution, Child Pornography and Trafficking (ECPAT), Save the Children and others, must get together to get justice for British and Indian children. And I ask readers to write letters to the PM and other organizations. If we say we are civilized, we must protect our children.
